5 Random Things I Learned Last Week

1. Soft tissue work, massage, ART (active release technique), etc. should be done at a minimum of once a month. Stretching the tissue is great, but you really should see a highly skilled therapist to break up all of your knots in order. This will allow for the tissue to lengthen more effectively along with the release of all those toxins.
2. The elbow like every other joint in the body has no brain, it is a reactor to what the rest of the body is telling it to do. Similar to the knee it is caught in the middle between the wrist and the shoulder with few places to go and nowhere to hide. In essence it’s driven in large part by what the wrist, shoulder, and scapula are telling it to do. A key component of keeping the elbow healthy is to make sure there is proper tissue lengthening (loading) of the wrist and scapula muscles in all 3 planes of motion in order to provide stability and take stress off the elbow. Also don’t forget to make sure there is proper loading of the trunk, hip, knee and foot in all 3 planes. In reality to understand the elbow we need to have a good understanding of the entire body and how the entire chain reacts.
3. Gelatin a common ingredient found in Jell-O, many candies, marshmallows, desserts, and breath mints (such as Altoids) are made from boiled bones, skins, tendons, and other connective tissue of animals.
4. A lot of people think cheese is vegetarian, however rennet a substance traditionally used as a coagulating agent during the cheese-making process is derived from the digestive juices of slaughtered calves. Rennet is a common food additive in foods that are considered “vegetarian” but really aren’t. If you like cheeses look for companies that use vegetable enzymes or microbial enzymes to make their cheese products.
5. By combining foods such as beans and brown rice you actually get all of the essential amino acids, leaving you with a great vegetarian source of protein with plenty of fiber to boot.
